Cherries For Inflammation

Cherries are a type of fruit in the same family of fruits as apricots, peaches and plums. They are small red fruits packed with loads of nutrients. Cherries have been used for ages for the relief and curing of a range of complaints and ailments. One of the uses is has always been cherries for inflammation.

It has been discovered conclusively that it is possible to use cherries for inflammation because they have been found to contain what are called phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds are commonly found in plants and their role in plants is to help in reproduction and growth. Using cherries for inflammation is common because cherries are said to be the fruit with the highest concentration of these phenolic compounds.

The specific phenolic compounds responsible for the use of cherries for inflammation are referred to as anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are present in the skin of the cherries and are responsible for the color of the fruit. The darker the cherry, the more anthocyanins it contains. Anthocyanins also have antioxidant properties.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to fighting off from pathogens and infection. However, sometimes this response is set off without there being anything to fight off. This is called an autoimmune response which causes certain diseases such as some types of arthritis and gout. This also happens in allergies, when the immune system over-reacts.

What happens when inflammation occurs is that more white blood cells are produced to fight the so called threat and these white blood cells produce a chemical reaction that sometimes results in fluid leakage that causes swelling or the stimulation of nerves that results in pain.

In many cases, inflammation is treated using NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin. However, studies have shown that you can use cherries for inflammation because they act in the same way the NSAIDs do. They block the chemical reaction that leads to pain and swelling.

As anthocyanins also have antioxidant properties, they also help prevent premature aging caused by the oxidative processes in the body and certain diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. Oxidation is a natural body process but during this process, free radicals are produced which are harmful. Other effects of inflammation include chronic pain, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections and diabetes.

The option of using cherries for inflammation is good news for many people, particularly those who prefer natural remedies. Also, it is a known fact that NSAIDs are not good for prolonged use. This is because they are extremely acidic and will cause the formation of ulcers. In fact it has been said they are the number one cause of stomach ulcers. In very severe cases stomach ulcers can result in hemorrhage which can lead to death.
