Research has proven that all cherries have excellent health benefits. This is because they are packed full of antioxidants that play a huge role in ensuring a person stays healthy and disease free.
One of the reasons that cherries are so full of healthy goodness is the because of the anthocyanins they contain. Anthocyanins are plant pigments and are responsible for giving cherries and other fruits their color. Darker fruits, like black cherries have higher levels of anthocyanins.
Dark cherry juice is an excellent way to get the antioxidants that your body requires. Antioxidants are important as they are useful in fighting the free radicals that are a byproduct of the oxidation process. Free radicals cause premature aging, they turn bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) into macrophage which narrows the arteries in the heart causing heart disease, cause oxidatice stress (which is body tissue destruction) and are responsible for diseases like cancer.
The antioxidants (anthocyanins) found in dark cherry juice have been proven to reduce pain and inflammation in conditions such gout. In gout, the juice has been showed to decrease the uric acid levels in the body. Uric acid is the major culprit in gout pain.
Dark cherry juice is not only a good source of antioxidants but it also contains melatonin. Melatonin is best known for the role it plays in regulating sleep but it is also used to reduce the effects of jet lag. Melatonin is also an antioxidant.
Other health benefits of dark cherry juice include providing relief from arthritis pain, prevention of certain types of cancer such as colon cancer, preventing heart disease, strokes and heart attacks, preventing the formation of cataracts and varicose veins.
You can achieve all these benefits from eating the cherry fruit but it is better to drink dark cherry juice. This is because the juice has higher concentrations of all the nutrients. Another added benefit is that the cherry fruit is a seasonal fruit and is therefore only available during certain periods, while the juice concentrate is available all year long.
Dark cherry juice can be purchased at health food stores, supermarkets and food supplements stores. It is available as a juice concentrate or in a ready to drink form. You should always buy a good quality juice even though it comes at a slightly higher price.
The cherry juice concentrate is usually cheaper than the ready to drink juice. You can take two teaspoons a day of the dark cherry juice concentrate. If you cannot stand the sweetness, it may be a good idea to add it to your breakfast smoothie or to yoghurt.
