Great Dried Cherry Recipes

Dried cherry recipes are getting more and more popular as the demand for this small but tasty fruit grows. Much of this is due to the health benefits of cherries that has come to light over the last few years. Yes, not only are cherries so nice for the taste buds but they are great for helping to keep your body running smoothly as well.

Cherries are so delicious and healthy it would be super to have them fresh and plump year round. There is nothing like fresh cherries for a snack or to make any recipe turn out mouth watering good. But alas, cherries have a very short growing period and we can only get them fresh for two or three months a year. For this reason you have just got to try at least one of the dried cherry recipes that are so readily available and easy to find.

Since 75% - 80% of the year cherries are out of season, the next best thing are dried cherries. Although cherries can be bought frozen or canned and used in recipes, the dried varieties are getting more popular for their convenience. You can use them for anything you can use frozen or canned cherries for but they make a great out of the bag snack as well.

Dried cherry recipes are numerous and you can find a number of great ones with a little searching on the internet. However, here is one of my favorites you may want to give a try. It is a must in the recipe book of any cherry lovers.

Cherry Pecan Bars

3/4 cup pastry flour or regular flour
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 of your favorite fruit preserves
1/3 cup applesauce
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 egg, beaten
1 cup oats
3/4 cup chopped dried tart cherries
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

Mix the oats, wheat germ, cinnamon,flour and salt together in a bowl. When well mixed add the applesauce, egg, honey and oil and stir again until well mixed. Then add the pecans and dried cherries and mix again.

Put the mixture in an 8 inch baking pan that has been greased and cook at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until a toothpick put in the center comes out clean.While you are wanting for the above, put your preserves in a. small boiler and bring to a slow boil. As soon as you take the pan out of the oven brush with a nice layer of the preserves. After it has cooled cut into 4 x 1.5 inch pieces and enjoy.
