Homemade Cherry Pie
Homemade Cherry Pie
Cherries are very commonly used as ingredients in recipes. Their popularity has something to do with their delicious taste as well as the health benefits that can be derived from them. One of the recipes that make use of cherries is the homemade cherry pie recipe.
Homemade cherry pie recipes will differ in certain aspects. Some types of the recipes will result in what will, strictly speaking, not be a homemade cherry pie. This is because it will include parts that are not homemade but rather store bought. For instance, some recipes will call for using store bought cherry pie filing or store bought cherry pie dough. The type of recipe you use will depend on your own preferences, the time you have to make the pie (it can be quite time consuming to make cherry pile filing or dough from scratch) as well as your culinary skills.
The easiest cherry pie recipes are those that do make use of some pre-made ingredients. However, whatever kind of recipe you choose, the homemade cherry pie is mostly likely to turn out just fine.
To make an easy homemade cherry pie you will need:
Fresh tart cherries – The cherries should be pitted. You can use canned cherries if fresh ones are not available. You can substitute the tart cherries with sweet cherries too.
Homemade pie dough crust – You will need a separate recipe for the dough. However, you can buy a pre-made dough at your local grocery store.
1 ½ cups of granulated sugar – You should use less if you are using sweet cherries.
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons lemon juice – You can add more with sweet cherries.
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 pinch of salt
2 teaspoons cornstarch
Directions for making the homemade cherry pie:
First, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, combine the cherries, vanilla, cinnamon, cornstarch, salt and lemon juice and mix well. The cherries should be thoroughly coated with the other ingredients.
Place the pie dough in a pie pan and then pour the mixed ingredients on it. Place another piece of pie dough on top of the mixture. Another idea is to cut the pie dough into strips and then weave them on top of the filling for a lattice effect.
Place pie pan in the lowest rack of the oven and bake for 30 to 45 minutes. The crust should have turned a nice golden brown color and the filling should be bubbling.
Remove from the oven and place on a rack to cool, which should take about 3 hours.
The homemade cherry pie makes for a very filing and delicious dessert. You can top it up with ice cream or whipped cream, or both.
